Generic or universal parts may be purchased online or through traditional online retailers, which carry oven ignitors that are interchangeable for Maytag brands Norge, Montgomery Ward, Jenn-Air, Admiral and Magic Chef. Oven ignitors typically last between five and eight years before they must be replaced. A well-functioning ignitor works by glowing intensely, which lights the gas coming from the electric gas valve. An old ignitor may still glow but not well enough to light the gas.

History

The Norge Appliance Co. was owned by BorgWarner, an Auburn Hills, Michigan, auto parts manufacturer founded in the 1880s. At the time, it was common for auto industry companies to have an interest in home appliance manufacturers, with General Motors owning the Frigidaire brand and Chrysler operating Airtemp, its air conditioning division. Vintage Norge gas stoves can be found on-line and in specialty stores. A model from 1937 featured a metal plate covering the gas burners, two storage drawers, an oven and a broiler. Another 1937 model, the Deco Style, also featured hide-away gas burners and came with a cream-and-apricot colored porcelain cabinet with matching salt and pepper shakers. The Norge brand is owned by Maytag, which was purchased by Whirlpool Corp. in 2006. The brand name is currently not in use.
