Corporate History

Inventor Charles Litton started the company in 1953 as an electronics and communications equipment builder. During the 1960s, the corporation diversified into areas as varied as shipyards, oilfields, data systems and household appliances. The varied products led Litton Industries to separate its business interests into military and commercial companies in the early 1990s. Its commercial division was named Western Atlas and was later bought by Maytag Appliances, while its military operations were sold to Northrup Grumman in 2001.
