Glenwood Oven Igniters
Its name now largely remembered for its older, antique ovens, Glenwood was known for its wood stoves, but its
manufacturer, Weir Stove Co., also manufactured a full series of standard kitchen ovens, such as the insulated
Glenwood Deluxe, a gas-fueled kitchen range featuring two ovens, four gas burners and a broiler. A flip top
covered the burners to provide additional counter space when the burners weren't in use, and a baked-on
enameling made cleanup easier. The company's line also included an insulated gas/wood combination stove, which
was used to heat the kitchen area as well as serve as a cooking range. It featured four gas burners, two
wood-heated cook lids, and a large insulated oven that boasted primary and secondary draft controls designed to
help circulate heat throughout the area.
Glenwood's History
Glenwood stoves were made by Weir Stove Co. in Taunton, Massachusetts. The company eventually became known as
Glenwood Stove Co. and would ultimately be acquired by Raytheon Corp.'s Caloric unit in 1978 and placed under
the Raytheon Appliance Group umbrella, eventually winding up beneath the Amana Home Appliances banner. Amana
eliminated the Glenwood brand entirely in 1996 during a consolidation that eliminated its value product lines.
Troubleshooting Glenwood Oven Ignitors
Many different igniters are listed as replacements for the Glenwood brand, though given its discontinued status, a
parts professional should be consulted to verify compatibility. Igniters include flat-style ignitors with body
lengths of approximately 3 ¾ inches, some are the more modern style with the vented appearance, while others are
the older style, with the nonenclosed grey silicon carbide composition. In general, igniter replacement is easy
one accessed. Two screws hold a bracket that keeps the ignitor in place. Simply unscrew the bracket, pop out the
old igniter after disconnecting its wire, and reinstall the new igniter to the wires and remount.
Warranty Information
Antique Glenwood ovens are no longer under warranties, unless a company refurbishing the ovens provides one.
However, ignitors and other parts may be covered by the parts retailers.
The company that made Glenwood stoves, Old Weir Stove Co., which later became Glenwood
Range Co., is no longer in existence. Amana is now under the Maytag umbrella, but the Glenwood brand has been
discontinued for more than a decade.
