Ignition Control Boards

Before electronic ignition models were introduced, equipment such as boilers, water heaters, and gas furnaces relied on a standing pilot system. Standing pilot systems rely on a constantly lit pilot light. Now, with electronic ignitions, it is possible to ignite the system without having to keep a pilot light on at all times, thus saving money. The ignition control board or module has diagnostic indicators which will flash up if a problem is detected. If the control board detects a problem in any sequence, then a lockout will be initiated which usually lasts until the system is reset and deemed safe to operate.

Common Types of Ignition Control Boards

There are various types of ignition boards whose features depend on the type of ignition system in place. Boards are available for:

  1. Direct spark ignition - no pilot lights
  2. Intermittent pilot ignition - pilot lights up when there is a call for heat
  3. Hot surface ignition - direct or indirect fire is applied to a pilot light
  4. Mercury bulb - a mercury switch is use to prove a flame on the pilot

How to Buy an Ignition Control Board

The easiest and safest way to purchase the right ignition control board is to use the manufacturer's part number, the furnace serial number or furnace model. If using a replacement part, search for a compatible model for the equipment you have.

Who Makes Ignition Control Boards?

For a long time, Honeywell was the major maker of ignition control boards for HVAC systems. Now, the following companies all produce similar products.
