York Furnace Ignitors
York Products and Services makes heating and cooling products through more than 20 manufacturing facilities
worldwide, operating over 500 sales offices around the globe. A unit of the publicly traded Johnson Controls
since December 2005, York's product line includes 10, 12, 14 and 16+ SEER air conditioners and heat pumps,
single package units, 90%+ and 80% AFUE gas furnaces, matching air handlers and evaporator coils. Products are
made in North America through plants in Oklahoma, Kansas and Mexico. York's distributors are augmented by a
network of independent distributors that send the products through the United States and Canada, covering all
states and provinces.
Ignitor Products
York offers a complete line of ignitor products engineered for simple installation. For example, a 240-volt
ignitor includes a round glowbar design that offers greater ceramic mass to minimize breakage. The ignitor
element itself features a double-helix design for greater ignition area. Designed for newer natural gas and
propane forced-air furnaces as a source of ignition for the main burner. One online parts dealer notes that older
York furnaces had many ignitor problems, and that the company recommends replacing the original ignitor with a
York/Norton Mini Hot Surface Ignitor Conversion Kit, part #473-20937-001, which fits several Upflow and Downflow
models with both 78%-AFUE and 90%-AFUE. More recent models use part #02532625000 to replace the spiral ignitor on
a wide variety of York 80%-AFUE furnaces.
Company History
Founded in 1874 in York, Pensylvania, York Products and Services has not only provided heating and cooling for
millions of private homes, as the company notes, but has also installed products domestically in the U.S. Capitol
Building, the Bank of America building in San Francisco and the U.S. Navy's entire nuclear submarine fleet.
York says its international projects have included the Kremlin, the Sydney Opera House and Britain's Houses of
Parliament. Johnson Controls paid $3.2 billion to acquire York, then known as York International, in 2005. The
company now operates as York Products and Services through the Johnson Controls Unitary Products division.
York's Warranty
York dealers will provide complete information on York's limited parts warranty. Ignitors purchased as repair
parts are covered for one year from the date of installation, unless the manufacturer offers an extended
warranty, which would then be honored. For its new units, York's standard coverage for ignitors is a year.
However, York offers the YORKCare Comfort Plan, which provides complete parts and labor coverage for as long as
10 years. The plan is free of deductibles, and there is no limit on the number of repairs, which can be set up
directly through a York dealer. Additionally, the YORKCare plan can be transferred to a new owner if you sell
your home during the term of the coverage.
